COUNSELLING

There are times in everyone's life when events and circumstances just overwhelm them and life becomes intolerable. They see no end in sight to the misery and are unable to make rational decisions to simple problems. These decisions are often regretted soon after and compound the mental turmoil. When someone is in this state they often argue with and hurt the people they love, usually without apparent reason or motive. Things should not be allowed to reach this stage - at or before this point therapy should be sought.

Counselling is a process which allows a person to explore and resolve problems by talking to a skilled professional who can help them find their way forward to reach their true emotional freedom and individuality. Counselling is usually short term and focuses on the present, Not the past. This may not be an easy process - it will involve digging below the surface and talking about incidents, emotions or feelings that are possible disturbing or uncomfortable. In this respect the therapist accepts unconditionally what the patient says and feels without judgement. They will follow a non-directive approach - never telling or advising a patient what to feel, say or do - only help them find the answers right for them.

The contention is that, personality development is like growth and sometimes that growth is impeded as the patient becomes detached from their true feelings. The role of the counsellor is to act as an empathic catalyst that allows these emotions to be released and enable normal growth to resume. No matter how dark life gets, with a little help the sun will rise again.

What happens during a consultation?

This first meeting between counsellor and patient is one of exploration and rapport building. The counsellor may ask few questions and these are generally for clarification of points you talk about.

The therapist may recommend that you have psychotherapy if they feel you require longer term help or you need to deal with issues from your past.
