Vis medicatrix naturae - only nature heals. This is a concept from Naturopathy and our therapists hold it to be basically true. This does not mean that we believe there is no place for conventional medicine, on the contrary, your G.P. should be the first person you contact if you are seriously ill. We are here to complement G.P.s not to replace them. We tend to view ourselves as an Holistic Therapists, looking at the whole person - mind, body (and on occasion spirit). We may use many modern diagnostic methods in our assessment of people's health, eg, spirometer, X-rays and blood tests. They are integrated into Holistic practice because they are accurate and detailed which allows us to help a client/patient with more precision and speed. We treat the whole person but can do this more effectively if we know exactly what the symptoms are. It is our aim to help the person to, where possible, self-heal and eliminate the symptoms - we never use drugs to suppress them.
Humans are a single organism made from billions of cells with many different functions. The cells have an effect on each other - the mind can affect the body, and vice versa, what we eat and drink can affect our moods and how our body reacts. Poor diet can cause many physical and mental symptoms. In fact incorrect diet, poor elimination or accumulation of toxins and body waste, injury - both physical and mental, destructive emotions, lack of exercise, too much stress, environmental pollution, genetic factors, etc., can throw the cell functions out of balance and result in illness or dis-ease of the mind-body. There is no such thing as the body or the mind, they are parts of a whole. A whole that is in constant flux due to floods of hormones, enzymes, amino acids, carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins, mineral ions, metabolic products and chemicals we ingest or inhale. Our cells are dying and new ones growing - even as you read this you have changed slightly.
The waterfall is like our being - at any one moment you cannot say exactly where a water molecule will go and what effect it will have on those around it - and yet, as a whole, it still appears the same. The mind-body knows how to heal itself and symptoms of dis-ease are often the mind-body's attempts to heal itself. We see ourselves as assistants to help it do so. Our aim is to identify the problem - be it mental, physical, dietary or environmental - and help the person to restore and preserve their natural balance. We will do this by using just one or a variety of therapies. As each person is an individual so is each therapy plan. We look in our therapists 'tool kit' and find the best 'tools' for each client/patient. So do not be surprised if you come for stress or anger management and it is suggested that you make dietary changes and prescribe have physical therapy too.
We are not medical doctors and as such cannot make a medical diagnosis of any disease. All our therapists will refer clients/patients to their G.P. if they feel you require conventional medical treatment. |
