More than 2000 years ago the Greek physician Hippocrates stated that there were two ways of healing. One was through fighting disease, which he called the way of opposites. The other was working with nature through co-operation and understanding. This method is know as the Law of Similars. He deemed that the latter was by far the superior.
A German doctor, Samuel Hahnemann, became disillusioned with medicine because he could not cure his patients. When he could not save his children, he abandoned his practice. He began experimenting on himself and his family and discovered that the substances that would make a healthy person ill, would cure a sick person with those symptoms. He called the testing of remedies a proving and homoeopathic remedies are still tested using this method by homoeopaths today. Hahnemann called his new system of healing Homoeopathy, translated, means Similar Suffering. Whilst orthodox medicine is called Allopathy which means Opposite Suffering.
Are homoeopathic remedies safe?
Yes, they are very safe and gently as only a minute amount of the active ingredient is used in a specially prepared form and are suitable for all ages from the new-born to the very old.
How does it work?
Homoeopathic remedies work by stimulating the body's own healing power enabling your body to heal itself.
What does the treatment involve?
Your first appointment will last one to one and a half hours while the homoeopath becomes familiar with your individual needs and symptoms. This will take into account your personality both emotionally and physically, past medical history and details of your complaints and how you experience them. Anything you say is in the strictest confidence.
You will be given a remedy that matches the symptoms you are experiencing. Subsequent appointments last approximately 30 - 45 minutes and are made every month to six weeks to assess your reponse and to prescribe further remedies if required until you are satisfied with your progress. Some people wish only to be free of specific ailments, while others prefer to continue having regular constitutional treatment to keep themselves both healthy and balanced.
Can you have homoeopathic remedies if you are on medication?
If you are on prescribed drugs from your doctor you can still enjoy the benefits of homoeopathy. Whilst homoeopathy has a different philosophy to orthodox medicine, the two can work well together. A homoeopath would never ask patients to stop taking their prescribed medicine. But, often, and under the supervision of their doctor, patients have been able to decrease their medication and sometimes they no longer need their drugs. Of course this depends on the illness and the drugs needed by the individual.
Homoeopathy is often used in conjunction with orthodox medicine in more serious diseases. For instance a cancer patient having chemotherapy might get relief from their nausea with homoeopathic remedies. Homoeopathy is also useful to make a patient less fearful when they are seriously ill.
Homoeopathy is also very useful in first aid situations. Now that doctors are trying to cut back on the number of antibiotics they prescribe, homoeopathic remedies can relieve chest infections, tonsillitis, etc. and restore a patient to good health quite quickly.
Children respond especially well to homoeopathy, bumps, bruises, cuts, teething, insomnia and many more nursery ailments are quickly cleared up with well chosen remedies.
And for more serious conditions: Acne, Anxiety, Arthritis, Depression, Digestion Disorders, Eczema, Female problems, Impotence and male problems, Migraine headaches are just some of the conditions that homoeopathy is able to treat.
Homoeopathy can give a wonderful sense of well-being, because it works on all levels, the body, mind and spirit.
