This form of massage has been practiced in India for at least 5000 years. It is based on the principals of medicine called Ayurveda. It originated from process of women grooming their children, their self and other women. Head massage is used for scalp hygiene and health by ridding the scalp of dead cells and moisturising the head and hair. It is also known as champissage where the word shampoo came from!
I use the enhanced form of this massage – I incorporate not only the face, neck and shoulders and too. I will work on some acupressure pressure points as well.
What to expect from a Head Massage
It is generally a seated massage working on the upper back, shoulders, neck, head and face. There will be no need to remove any clothing for this massage.
Oils can be used during the head and face massage if you choose. If you do want oils to be used you will have to remove your top. You will be provided with a large towel to wrap around yourself before we begin.
I will start a Head Massage by just resting my hands on your shoulders and tuning my breathing in sync. with yours. This also allows you to get used to my touch and energy.
I will start the actual massage by applying gentle pressure to points in the upper back and shoulders to start releasing tight muscle muscles and knots. I will then move to your neck and eventually your head
Head Massage is often seen as a ‘quick treat’ and for some that is all it is. However; the benefits of a head massage quite considerable and can assist with a variety of physical and emotional problems and concerns.
Benefits of Head Massage:
Helps prevent migraines, headaches and back pain
People often carry their tension in the upper back, neck and even their scalp muscles. This may lead to constant headaches, upper back/shoulder pain and even migraines. These things make life uncomfortable on a daily basis This can lead to irritability, stress and sometimes even depression.
As the massage progresses it will reduce headache-inducing blockages and encourage a better circulation within the muscles to remove tension and any toxins present.
Promotes hair growth
It is believed that Head Massage stimulates hair growth. The massage increases blood flow, therefore, nourishment and oxygen to the scalp and hair follicle. Which should in turn stimulate hair growth. It could be a way too long, luscious locks!
Stimulates lymphatic drainage
Head Massage will stimulate and improve lymphatic drainage and blood flow in the neck. This helps to remove unwanted waste products from the body.
Relieves insomnia and restlessness at night
Insomnia and restlessness are common side-effects of stress. Head Massage will very quickly produce relaxation and so relieve stress. It will reduce the physical symptoms and create a sense of wellbeing and relaxation. This will in turn allow your body to rest better.
Relieves symptoms of anxiety and depression
It is believed that massaging the head may encourage a better supply of oxygen to the brain. This is a brilliant way of reducing anxiety and of lifting your mood. Oxygen helps you think clearly and creatively.
Renews energy levels
A Head Massage works with the Ayurvedic concept of balance. Working on the chakras through Massage has a powerful effect in bringing the energy of the body back into balance.
Boosts memory capabilities
Our short-term memory often has difficulties due overload caused by modern life. We may have disorganised thoughts, lack of focus so it can become very difficult for us to collect our thoughts and remember them.
A Head Massage slows us down, slows our breathing, a ‘sensual’ awareness spreads through us, thoughts become quietened and lovely awareness is brought into being.
