Usui Reiki Ryoho (Introduction)

Usui Reiki Ryoho (Introduction)

Usui Reiki Ryoho

Usui Reiki Ryoho translates as Usui Spiritual Energy Healing Method.

The Usui Reiki Ryoho lineage as taught by me reflects the original practices that were taught by Usui Mikao himself. This means there is no ‘modern

founder’ of this form of Reiki. It is not a modern Western construct with ‘bolt-ons’ that should not be there.

Compared to many teachers my lineage back to Usui Mikao is very short.

  • Mikao Usui
  • Kanichi Taketomi
  • Kimiko Koyama
  • Hiroshi Doi
  • Frans Stiene
  • Stephen Lovering

Just five masters between me and the founder himself. I know some lineages that are twice that length.

Are all Reiki courses the same?

No they are not. Teachers will always teach what they are taught by their masters. But they will often change it a little to fit them self. With Usui Reiki

Ryoho this does not happen.

This form of Reiki is not influenced by ‘New Age’ concepts and add-ons. Such as Aura interpretation and protection from evil spirits. There are no Kundalini, Tibetan Reiki attunements and so many other ‘spiritual tourism’ concepts taught as original Reiki.

It is not about making it easier to do or simpler to understand using a Western mindset.

What does Usui Reiki Ryoho typically include?

Firstly it uses the Japanese energy system.

At its foundation are the five basic elements of the system of Reiki. These are expanded upon with each new level of Reiki.

1 Reiki Precepts

The Reiki precepts are one of the five main elements of the system of Reiki.

For Today Only:
Do not Anger
Do not worry
Be Humble
Be Honest in your Work
Be Compassionate to Yourself and Others

Say this every morning and evening keep in your mind

3 Hands-on Healing (Tenohira)

4 Reiki Symbols and Mantras

5 Reiju, (Spiritual Blessings) and Attunements

When you learn Usui Reiki Ryoho it becomes a personal spiritual journey. You can then use it to help yourself, be healthier and happier in life and sometimes help others.

Usui Reiki Ryoho is taught in Levels.

There are three Levels or Degrees of Reiki. They are outlined below – you have to complete one before you can move onto the next.

Levels 1 and 2 are taught over a weekend. Level 3 is taught several months later.

Shoden – Level I

Shoden, means “first teachings” in Japanese, is a one day beginners course. The course is a combination of teaching and experience. The course begins with introductory talks on the philosophy, practice and history of Usui Reiki Ryoho; in Japan and in the West. Students are then introduced to four of the five elements of Japanese Reiki practice: gokai (philosophical precepts), kokyu-Ho (breathing techniques and meditation), tenohira (performing treatments for the self and others), and reiju (receiving a spiritual blessing, or “attunement” from one’s teacher).

During the day students will be given four traditional Japanese Reiki attunements, unique to the system of Usui Reiki Ryoho. Every attunement strengthens, cleanses and balances your personal energy system allowing you to perceive and work with ki easier.

You will then be introduced to the Japanese model of the human energy system, this includes Haras not chakras .Haras are connected to Japanese martial arts. The main hara is a couple of inches, (5cm), below the navel. It is inside the body and closer to the spine than the navel. there is also one in the heart and a powerful spiritual one in the brain.

We also cover traditional techniques such as kenyoku (cleansing one’s energy before or after treatments and meditation) and joshin kokyu ho (focusing the mind with breath).

This is an experiential course so as much time as possible is given to practicing treatments. You will give and receive at least two or three treatments in the afternoon session.

Benefits of Shoden

  • you develop a clear understanding of Reiki energy work
  • you begin to feel grounded, balanced and relaxed
  • learn how to give simple Reiki treatments to both yourself and others
  • so you begin to heal your own physical and emotional self
  • receive support from your teacher and give it to your peers

Okuden – Level II

Prerequisite: Shoden, Level I

Okuden is a Japanese word meaning “inner teachings”. It builds on Level I; deepening and enhancing the students understanding of Reiki. We review the four elements of traditional Japanese Reiki learned on the previous day and you are introduced to the fifth element: jumon (mantras) and shirushi (symbols).

You will be given three healing symbols (shirushi) used in Level II Reiki. Each one has an accompanying mantra. The symbols all have Japanese names, two come from Tendai Buddhism, the other is a sentence in Japanese. The symbols are an important and powerful aspect of Okuden. Using of them in treatment and meditation creates strength and focus in Reiki work. We will develop your ability to work with the Haras.

We extensively cover the three symbols and mantras so you will gain a solid understanding of their origins, nature and how they can deepen and enhance your Reiki practice. You do not have to memorise the symbols and mantras during the day – what are manuals/notes for?

You are given three traditional Japanese Reiki attunements; each attunement helps to strengthen, cleanse and balance the energy system, making it easier to perceive and work with ki. You will have significant time to practice and receive Reiki during the day.

Benefits of Okuden:

  • enhance your understanding and practice of Usui Reiki Ryoho
  • add breadth and depth your own personal healing process
  • learn to work with Reiki symbols and mantras
  • learn how to send distance healing with Reiki, (enkaku chiryo)
  • learn sensing energetic imbalances with the hands, (byosen reikan ho)
  • develop your intuition, (reiji ho)
  • learn new techniques for meditation, relaxation and self-healing
  • increase your confidence in treating others
  • receive support from your teacher and give it to your peers

Shinpiden: Reiki Level III – Master/Teacher

Prerequisite: Okuden or Reiki Level II

Shinpiden is a Japanese word meaning “mystery teachings”. We begin with a quick review of Levels I & II and then have a Reiki Share where each student demonstrates their increased development. The Shinpiden course is different for each group as it focuses on the unique needs of each student. This is one reason why the group size is kept small – to ensure a high degree of personal attention for each person. As in Shoden and Okuden, this is an experiental course so a substantial amount of time is devoted to giving/receiving treatments.

You will be given the fourth traditional symbol and mantra. We will discuss this symbol, its roots and use in treatments, self-healing and initiation of others. There is a new meditation practice, kokyu-ho techniques to learn, and ways to deepen and expand their current Reiki practice. You will also receive both the traditional Usui Reiki Ryoho attunement and the ceremony of reiju, meaning “spiritual blessing”. Reiju is the original ceremony; all Reiki attunements evolved from this. It is a simple and inspiring ritual, which is beneficial to give as well as to receive.

In the afternoon you will be fully trained in performing attunements to initiate others into all levels of Usui Reiki Ryoho. The rest of the time will be dedicated to practicing the various attunements, allowing you to become confident in performing them. You will also learn how to perform reiju for others.

Benefits of Shinpiden:

  • enhance your understanding and practice of Usui Reiki Ryoho
  • add depth and breadth your own personal healing process
  • expand your knowledge of symbols and mantras
  • become more proficient in treating others
  • learn how to perform attunements and reiju
  • gain a diploma permitting you to initiate and teach all levels of Usui Reiki Ryoho
  • receive support from your teacher and give it to your peers
